With the District Registry live, we have arrived at the first phase of governance hand off for the district0x Network. This phase will take an active group of governance participants and district builders. This is an open invite to token holders, builders, Web3 enthusiasts, developers, and non-developers alike.

For a Token-Curated Registry (TCR) to work effectively, it must be seeded with content to “kick start” the registry. People need to know what to curate and how to curate it. This is similar to the Reddit launch strategy in their early days. As controversial as this may seem, organic growth on the internet simply doesn’t exist. Especially as the internet is being slowly balkanized by entrenched interests and industry incumbents.

We learned what it takes to bootstrap a new concept like a TCR during the Meme Factory launch. We populated the registry with content so we could set the tone and show people how the registry works. This strategy worked well because we now have hundreds of submissions of original content in Meme Factory and it truly is “a better list”.

People need leadership even in a decentralized system.

The Previous #StealThis Initiative

A previous attempt at the ‘Steal This Proposal’ initiative was tried at launch. However that approach was admittedly not scalable or well executed. Based on feedback, the attempt to let other people steal a district proposal that a team member created was not compelling to most users.

However, this time we will be “stealing” your ideas. 😎

Bounties & Incentives

You can earn the District Network Token (DNT) by being an active governance participant within the District Registry because it’s an incentive driven Token-Curated Registry (TCR). Based on the design of a TCR, you can earn the native token based on how active you are within the registry and how active the registry is as a whole. These bounties will help set this process in motion.

We will also be covering your DNT and ETH fees for each submitted proposal along with an additional 2000 DNT for you to do as you please with. This is a limited set of bounties and will be “first come first serve”.

As a reminder, we are still giving the proposal creators 500,000 DNT if their district is selected to be built as the next district on the network.

The District Registry entries that receives the most staked DNT will dictate what ones are selected as the next official marketplaces. The closing date for this selection process will be dependent on activity within the registry and our road-map progress.

The district0x dev team will also build (or help build) this user submitted district even if the creator doesn’t know how to code. This is in anticipation of the launch of our “No/Low Code” dApp builder dubbed ‘District Designer’.

Why Steal Proposals?

Encouraging the community to help migrate the proposals from Github through bounties will do two things. It will save the users on gas fees, and kickstart the District Registry in the same fashion as we did with Meme Factory. Not to mention, the original creators have a large incentive to challenge the “stolen” proposal, earn DNT doing so, and allow people who actively participate in this process to earn DNT as well.

Not to mention, participants who stake towards a district will gain access to the district Aragon entities; giving them access to governance within those specific districts.

We will also present the proposals on the Dapp Digest to keep everyone in the loop with what’s happening in the Registry.

Claiming A Stolen Proposal

If you are the the original creator and want to claim your district back, you can challenge the “stolen” submission at any time. You will then submit your own proposal and can claim the bounty as well. Please reach out to us so we can help you get traction, answer any questions you may have, and verify you are the original creator on stream.

Can Anyone Steal A Proposal?

Yes. You are free to do so and collect the bounty. However we encourage you to create an original proposal considering that many proposals are out of date, or will likely be challenged at some point.

However, if the original creator never comes to claim the proposal and you put work into updating it, we will consider it fair game. We would not be surprised to see similar competing districts offering different governance models or economic functions. It’s all open source, so expect competition.

How to Challenge a Stolen Proposal

You will need to match the deposit of an already submitted district (currently 10,000 DNT) by navigating to that proposal in the registry, and entering a challenge reason as seen below.

You will then need to submit your original proposal in place of a stolen one and then reach out to us on our community channels. We will then spotlight you or your district proposal to drum up support from DNT holders. They will need to stake towards your district so they can participate in your specific Aragon entity. In the event there is ever an issue with this process, we could potentially use the Aragon court to resolve any disputes. However, the Registry will likely be sufficient unless we see two genuinely competing ideas. Which would also be a great outcome!

This will be similar to campaigning for votes in any election process. Considering the fact that the DNT holders stand to earn DNT by voting and staking on your challenge, I’m sure we will see a group of supporting DNT holders who will gladly stake towards your new submission.

How do I submit a District Proposal?

You will submit your proposal on the official submission page. As always, be sure you are on the correct URL: https://registry.district0x.io/submit

You are encouraged to create your own Github repository for your project. This will encourage more people to take your project proposal seriously, and give you a better chance of people staking towards your proposal. However you are still able to submit proposals to our Github repo as a temporary solution.

If you choose to participate in the “#StealThisProposal” bounties, you will need the following items:

  • Metamask, ETH, and DNT
  • A District Title
  • The district description describing the marketplace in detail
  • A URL to either a mock-up or landing page. Suggestions: Figma or Notion.
  • A GitHub URL (Ours or yours)
  • An Aragon ID
  • A 256x256 Logo. Suggestion: Canva or Gimp
  • A 1120 x 800 Background. Suggestions: Canva or Gimp

For the logo and background, you can of course use the images found in Github if you are using an already submitted proposal.

We also suggest social media links as well, so you can gain a following and direct people to more information about your district.

Note: This is a gas intensive process and we suggest having at least .3 ETH to complete the registration process. Reach out to discuss how we can help with gas costs if this is an issue, we’re happy to help. Otherwise just link us your transaction record and we can refund some of your gas fees. (Within reasonable amounts, of course)

If you pay a lower gas fee, do be patient and only submit one transaction. Submitting more than one will cause issues and waste gas. We will only refund gas for a single transaction per user.

Keep in mind, this gas refund only applies to the first 10 proposals. We may issue more bounties based on the results of this campaign.
